Changing Your Default Browser [hack]

This is for Linux users who are having trouble changing the browser Thunderbird uses to open links with. Or users who want to stop all applications using their old browser, for whatever reason.

It’s a bit of a hack, but a quick and easy fix is to simply change the binary file being used. If Thunderbird is opening in Firefox, then go to /usr/bin/ and rename the firefox bin, then create a sym link to the browser you want (calling it firefox). If you still want to use the old browser then you’ll have to update any commands to what you renamed it to.

In my case, I installed Firefox 3.5, but Thunderbird kept opening links in Firefox 3.0. So I simply uninstalled Firefox 3.0 and sym linked 3.5.

Sorry it’s a hack, but hopefully this helps someone :)
