Banshee iPod Encoding (fix)

This will probably be really obvious for some, but for the rest of us!

If you’ve tried transferring songs to your iPod in Banshee and found them unplayable, it’s likely you haven’t got the required GStreamer libraries.

Any FLAC or Ogg Vorbis files should automatically be converted to MP3s when you transfer them to your iPod. You’ll know if this is working by right-clicking the iPod in Banshee and checking that Device Properties->Encode to is set to MP3.

For this to work, you’ll need the gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse package (for Ubuntu users), and not just the gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly package (like I had).

Hopefully this helps someone…

I just like the style you took with this article. It is not every day that you just find something so to the point and enlightening.

Thanks for posting this fix. This resolved my problem. Without gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse, my only option under Device Properties->Encode was “Waveform PCM”. While this encoding worked, it was gulping up space on my ipod 4G nano too fast.
